Casement or tilt & turn: which window suits you?
Two popular window styles compared — how they open, where each works best, and what to think about.
· 1 min readBoth styles are secure, efficient and made to measure. The difference is how they open.
Casement windows
Casement sashes open outwards, hinged at the side (like a door) or at the top.
- Familiar and suitable for almost every UK home
- Top-hung openers can stay open for ventilation in light rain
- Opening sashes don't take up room inside — handy behind blinds or above a sink
Tilt & turn windows
Tilt & turn sashes open inwards, two ways from one handle: tilt the top in a little for ventilation, or turn the whole sash in like a door.
- Clean the outside of the glass from indoors
- Secure ventilation in the tilt position
- Popular in flats and on upper floors
Which should you choose?
Choose casement if you want the classic look and don't want sashes swinging into the room. Consider tilt & turn for upstairs rooms that are hard to reach from outside, or if easy cleaning matters most.
